Tony Evans Steps Back From Ministry For Spiritual Recovery And Restoration

Tony Evans, the esteemed leader of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas and a best-selling author, announced on June 9 that he is stepping back from his ministry due to past sins. In a heartfelt statement to his congregation, Evans, 74, emphasized the importance of repentance and restoration, aligning with the biblical standards he has always upheld.

“The foundation of our ministry has always been our commitment to the Word of God as the absolute supreme standard of truth to which we are to conform our lives,” Evans stated. “When we fall short of that standard due to sin, we are required to repent and restore our relationship with God. A number of years ago, I fell short of that standard. I am, therefore, required to apply the same biblical standard of repentance and restoration to myself that I have applied to others.”

Although Evans did not specify the nature of his actions, he clarified that they were not criminal. “While I have committed no crime, I did not use righteous judgment in my actions,” he said. Consequently, he is stepping away from his pastoral duties and submitting to a healing and restoration process established by the church elders.

Tony Evans has led Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for over 40 years and founded The Urban Alternative, a Christian Bible teaching ministry. His radio broadcast, “The Alternative with Tony Evans,” is aired on numerous outlets worldwide. The church, predominantly Black and nondenominational, confirmed that Evans announced his decision during both services on Sunday.

“This difficult decision was made after tremendous prayer and multiple meetings with Dr. Evans and the church elders,” the church’s statement reads. “The elder board is obligated to govern the church in accordance with the Scriptures. Dr. Evans and the elders agree that when any elder or pastor falls short of the high standards of Scripture, the elders are responsible for providing accountability and maintaining integrity in the church.”

Lead associate pastor Bobby Gibson and the church’s elders will outline future steps concerning interim leadership. Evans shared that his family and church elders have supported him through this decision, and he expressed gratitude for their grace.

Evans’s wife of 49 years, Lois, passed away in 2019. He remarried in November, with the church introducing his new wife, Carla Evans, in December. Tony Evans, known for his pioneering work as the first African American to have a study Bible and full Bible commentary bearing his name, has consistently advocated for accountability within the Christian community.

In a 2021 interview, Evans discussed the importance of correction and accountability, referencing how he “corrected” gospel musician Kirk Franklin after an incident. Now, Evans is entering his own period of “spiritual recovery and healing,” telling his congregation, “During this season, I will be a worshiper like you. I have never loved you more than I love you right now, and I’m trusting God to walk me through this valley.”
