Introduction: Samuel’s calling reminds us of something powerful; God can call us, mark us, and set us apart before we even know Him. Samuel grew up in the temple, serving under Eli, yet didn’t recognize God’s voice. In the New Testament, Jesus tells Nathanael that He knew him before their first meeting. Both accounts show us that God’s knowledge of us and His call on us begins long before our awareness catches up.
Scripture Anchors
- Old Testament: 1 Samuel 3:7 (KJV) — “Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.”
- New Testament: John 1:48 (KJV) — “Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.”
Teaching Points
Faith Focus I: Established Through Prayer
- Samuel’s mother, Hannah, prayed him into existence and dedicated him to God (1 Samuel 1:27–28).
- Many of us are walking in answered prayers of those who stood in the gap for us—your grandparents, parents, pastor, or friends who interceded on your behalf.
- Jesus Himself interceded for future believers (John 17:20).
Faith Focus II: Called Before Awareness
- Samuel heard God’s voice but didn’t recognize it (1 Samuel 3:4–9).
- Nathanael was surprised that Jesus already knew him (John 1:48).
- Just like Samuel and Nathanael, you may have moments where God is working in your life before you even realize it’s Him—through opportunities, protection, or guidance you didn’t yet understand.
Faith Focus III: Recognizing and Responding
- Samuel needed Eli to guide him to the right response.
- We need Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and spiritual leaders to help us discern God’s call.
- Our posture must be, “Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.”
From Pain Point to Victory: You may feel overlooked or uncertain, like Samuel did when he didn’t recognize God’s voice. But Jesus reminds you that you are fully seen and known. The struggle of not hearing clearly is overcome in the victory of Christ, who calls you by name.
Application: Reflection Questions:
- Who prayed for you before you knew God?
- Can you recall a time when God was moving in your life before you recognized it?
- Who serves as your “Eli” or spiritual guide today?
- How can you train your ears and heart to recognize God’s voice more quickly?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for knowing me before I knew You. Thank You for the prayers that carried me and the people who guided me. Teach me to hear Your voice clearly, to obey without hesitation, and to walk in the calling You placed on me before the foundation of the world. Amen.
